Therefore shall they eat of the fruit of their own way, and be filled with their own devices.
The Proverbs are framed as a father’s instructions to his son. However, in Proverbs 1:20, the tone shifts, and it’s wisdom appealing to the simple. God is reasoning with the unbelieving, much like a preacher passionately pleading with his congregation.
How often has it happened[1] that verse 30 rings true, Proverbs 1:30 (KJV)They would none of my counsel: they despised all my reproof. We preach and plead and give line upon line. People even come to us for what they think is our counsel.[2] They “despise all [our] reproof” either by growing angry with our giving it or else by simply smiling and ignoring it. Either way, they have rejected it.
And so, we must watch as they “eat the fruit of their own way.” They will cry about it and ask to talk to us about it, but we cannot help them. They hated knowledge and now they are filled with their own devices.
The promise of the Word is Proverbs 1:33 (KJV)But whoso hearkeneth unto me shall dwell safely, and shall be quiet from fear of evil. I doubt the preacher gets to realize this passage very often in his own life because he has been called of the Lord to bear the burden of crying out to the simple. Once in a while, however, there is a soul who “attains unto wise counsels.”[3] This man dwells safely and is “quiet from fear of evil.”
