And I saw a new heaven and a new earth: for the first heaven and the first earth were passed away; and there was no more sea.
My son Bohannan recently shared a thought-provoking link[1] discussing how ancient Western societies heavily relied on oceans for transportation and commerce. Even today, the major cities, even here in the United States, flourish as bustling seaports, a testament to the blessings of the sea.
To envision a world without the sea is to imagine a significant shift in our world’s design. Before the flood, Earth lacked seas, featuring rivers instead. Revelation twenty presents an intriguing return to God's original plan.
The symbolic role of the sea extends into biblical and other writings, portraying the vast multitudes of mankind. Could it be that in the eternal state, there exists a genuine unity of souls instead of the “sea of humanity”? Our world incessantly pursues global harmony, manifesting itself in the concept of a one-world government. While ideologies like communism and tyrants like Hitler sought unity through domination, true unity, according to godliness, emerges through liberty.
Worldly or ungodly pursuits may achieve temporary unity, as exemplified by Antichrist's short-lived reign in the Great Tribulation, but eternally, God seems to bring about unity by eliminating the metaphorical sea of humanity. In this eternal state, souls are finally, forever, and perfectly free—free from domination, fear, societal pressures, liberated to worship and love God in spirit and truth.
