Jeremiah 9:2-3 (KJV) Wilderness Retreat

Jeremiah 9:2-3 (KJV)

Oh that I had in the wilderness a lodging place of wayfaring men; that I might leave my people, and go from them! for they be all adulterers, an assembly of treacherous men.

And they bend their tongues like their bow for lies: but they are not valiant for the truth upon the earth; for they proceed from evil to evil, and they know not me, saith the LORD.

What an interesting blend of language. The Word of God is "generally" to be understood grammatically/literally, as we would any other letter. God communicates to us in the manner we know. At the same time, the message is supernatural, “all scripture is given by inspiration of God."

God used prophets and preachers to communicate to us. "Holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost."  God used their backgrounds, their vocabulary, and their thought processes to communicate so that we can't call the Bible a strict dictation. He superintended over them so that, using their personal assets, God gave us exactly, word for word, the message he intended for us.

Here the prophet Jeremiah pour out his own heart.

·       Oh that I had in the wilderness a lodging place

·       He would love to escape his circumstances

·       That I might leave my people and go from them

I've seen a lot of this the last couple of years - Christians who've gotten so overwhelmed with the liberal politics of their home, that they fled to someplace more comfortable.

For they be all adulterers, an assembly of treacherous men... They proceed from evil to evil..."

This all sounds like Jeremiah, doesn't it? And it is. It's the burden of his heart. But then notice, "and they know not me, saith the LORD."

God did not want to escape to the wilderness. He was not overwhelmed with the sin of His people. In this passage God used Jeremiah's experiences and burdens to convey to Israel, and to us, God's grief over sin.

A heart that loves and believes God can easily see this. However, an evil heart of unbelief will choose to see in this an excuse to remain unbelieving.
