Thus saith the Lord GOD; Because the Philistines have dealt by revenge, and have taken vengeance with a despiteful heart, to destroy it for the old hatred;
There are hardly any people of the Canaanites who more famously caused Israel grief than the Philistines.
• Saul was made king to fight them.
• They were the ones who stole the ark.
• Eli’s sons were killed by them.
• Goliath was a Philistine.
• Saul was killed fighting them.
Most of David’s kingdom was one battle after the other against them.
Fast forward hundreds of years. God says His problem with the Philistines was “the old hatred.” It means something like a grudge. These hundreds of years later they’ve been effectively defeated, and life has moved on, but they haven’t given up their grudge.
It’s the “root of bitterness” [1] that we need to pull out. Few things are more damaging than “old hatred.”
But God has given us an answer: fresh forgiveness.
