For the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost.
Jesus only intended to pass through Jericho, but as was always the case, He sought after the souls of men.
Zacchaeus, a publican and a sinner, had climbed into a tree to get a glimpse of Jesus. It must have indicated a longing that, though secreted in the heart, revealed his conviction. This compelled Jesus to investigate. He 'must abide' with Zacchaeus that day. Do we stop what we’re doing to speak with those the Lord reveals to us are seeking?
We do not know the details of the conversation between Jesus and Zacchaeus. The Bible only tells us the result. The details of the gospel are recorded in multiple places in the Scriptures. It was not necessary to have them here. The purpose of this account is to remind us of Christ’s purpose on this earth and of ours.
That Zacchaeus offered to return money and do other works meet for repentance doesn’t mean these works were necessary for his salvation. I would rather say they served as a sign that salvation had been wrought in his soul. No one is saved by works, but no one who is saved refuses to work.
It is this work of seeking out the lost and then giving the gospel of salvation that Jesus came to do. It is this work that we, who profess to know Him, love Him, and follow Him, must be about.
• Never be too busy to notice those seeking.
• Never be too embarrassed to go where they live.
• Never be afraid to tell them about Christ’s salvation.
