In thy filthiness is lewdness: because I have purged thee, and thou wast not purged, thou shalt not be purged from thy filthiness any more, till I have caused my fury to rest upon thee.
John Gill says that the phrase "I have purged thee, and thou wast not purged" means that God had given them opportunities to repent through such events as the nine years of Babylonian oppression up to this point, but they had not repented. It was then, at that moment, that God determined to allow Nebuchadnezzar to take Jerusalem.
I can hear some Bible skeptic right now accusing our God of being weak and incapable. "What do you mean God tried to purge them and failed? Why would you trust a God like that?" Those who do not know God do not understand the mind of the Lord and cannot understand the Bible. God's grace in allowing the free will of men to repent or not is not weakness. It is, in fact, the ultimate strength.
I think I have met many people who claim to have been purged, to have been saved, who know something of the goodness of God, but have not trusted Christ and so are not born again. They, like Agrippa,[1] have been almost persuaded. They have tasted the goodness of God.[2] They have been shown His light, yet they remain in darkness. Like Jerusalem in Ezekiel's day, they come finally to that moment when God's mercy runs out and the grace of God fails. They are lost forever.
I am reminded, though, that in the case of Jerusalem, the siege began this day, but the fall of the city was still two years in the future. Even after the pronouncement of no more grace, there were two years of mercy.
If you are playing around with religion, now is the time to quit and surrender your soul's safekeeping to Christ alone!
