But the men of Sodom were wicked and sinners before the LORD exceedingly.
It's not that the people in Canaan were not wicked too. "For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God." But there is a type of sin that is exceedingly wicked before the Lord. God would deal with the sin of Sodom and Gomorrah in His own time, just as He would the sin of the Canaanites in their own time. The point of the passage, at this time, had more to do with Lot than with the sin of Sodom.
It's a generous thing Abraham did.
- He did not want strife between him and Lot.
- He did not want strife between his men and Lot’s.
- He allowed Lot the choice of location.
Lot took full advantage of the opportunity. He observed the land of Canaan as well as the land in the valley where Sodom and Gomorrah were. He considered the fields. He looked at the water sources. He contemplated the potential for profit. But he did not take into consideration the worldly and wicked influences he and his family would be set under.
I am not saying that he shouldn’t have gone there because of those influences. If he hadn’t, Abraham would have. However, he should have considered them. God sends us into all the world. Some of those places are especially wicked. A Christian should never shirk from going where God sends him. But a Christian ought not to make his decisions about where God would have him go based only on the potential for profit and comfort. Someone must take light to the dark places of the world. But if he must go there, he ought to at least pack some extra light bulbs.
