I would they were even cut off which trouble you.
John Gill wrote of this passage, “These words are a solemn wish of the apostle with respect to the false teachers, … that they might do no more mischief to the churches of Christ: this he said not out of hatred to their persons, but from a concern for the glory of God, and the good of his people.”
Albert Barnes wrote, “That is, as I understand it, from the communion of the church. So far am I, says Paul, from agreeing with them and preaching the necessity of circumcision as they do, that I sincerely wish they were excluded from the church as unworthy of a place among the children of God.”
We do not need to take this any further than the passage. It simply means that Paul urged the believers to remove them from the church, refuse to have fellowship with them, and not allow them any further influence in their lives. The passage makes perfect sense. Why would anyone allow another person to persist in causing them pain, trouble of spirit, or questions of faith? The answer is simple: cut them off. If it’s a family member, we might not be able to rid our lives of them completely, but we can limit our contact with them and the environment in which we find ourselves in their presence.
We must not be troubled cutting off troublemakers. In no case is this more evident than in matters of the spirit versus the flesh.
