Genesis 37:2 (KJV) First Impressions

Genesis 37:2 (KJV)

These are the generations of Jacob. Joseph, being seventeen years old, was feeding the flock with his brethren; and the lad was with the sons of Bilhah, and with the sons of Zilpah, his father's wives: and Joseph brought unto his father their evil report.

Genesis chapters 36 and 37 begin with very similar purpose.

Genesis 36:1 (KJV)

Now these are the generations of Esau, who is Edom.

Genesis 37:2a (KJV)

These are the generations of Jacob….

Genesis chapter 36 is taken up with - 43 verses—all focused on the generations of Esau. Genesis chapter 37 begins the account of just one of Jacob’s sons, Joseph.

At first glance, one could almost suspect that Jacob’s favoritism for Joseph is reflected in this chapter. However, this is not the case. In fact, the remainder of the Bible—the rest of the 50 chapters of Genesis and every one of the remaining 65 books—addresses the generations of Jacob and how they reflect upon the promise of God that, in the seed of Abraham, all nations of the earth should be blessed.

First glances are seldom an accurate representation of the fullness of a thing. While first impressions are often important, they should not be the end of our understanding of a person, place, or truth. Thoughtful reflection is the wisest course in every issue of life.

In matters of the spiritual world, one would do well to investigate the claims of various religions, search out the roots—perhaps of the faith of their fathers—and seriously study the Word of God, not just for what you’ve already been taught, but for what the Bible actually says.

·       Examine the science of the Bible and see that it is completely accurate.

·       Consider the archaeological evidence and learn that it confirms the biblical narrative.

·       Look at the evidence for the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ and discover that, as incredible as it may seem, it is verifiable.

The Bible records the plan of God for the saving of men—for the saving of your soul and mine. Regardless of what your first impressions may be, take the time to thoughtfully search it out. You will then discover that it was written with you in mind.
