Galatians 4:21 (KJV) Blinded by Tradition

Galatians 4:21 (KJV)

Tell me, ye that desire to be under the law, do ye not hear the law?

I recently met a very nice man, well respected in his community, who is thoroughly entrenched in the doctrines of the Seventh Day Adventists, a group stuck on obeying the laws of the Old Testament.

It was to a group like them—a group I am convinced the SDA is a part of, known as Judaizers—that Paul spoke of.

In this passage, Paul’s question to those who desire to follow the laws of the Old Testament was this: “Haven’t you considered the teachings of that Old Testament law?”

What is apparent is that those who claim to be followers of the law, of whatsoever group they identify, have not fully embraced even the teachings of the Old Testament. I don’t want to suggest they do not need the New Testament, for it is surely the Word of God and completes the revelation from God. I mean instead to follow Paul’s line of reasoning and to point out that there is enough revelation in the OT law to lead them to NT liberty, if they would but open their eyes to it.

And herein lies the problem. Tradition, preconceived notions, and perhaps pride blind their eyes to the very Word of God to which they claim to cling.

Paul’s conversation with them is curious. On the one hand, he speaks to them as converts, in need only of the perfecting of their faith. On the other, he claims to be afraid for them (and of them—these folks can become vicious), lest he had bestowed labor upon them in vain.

Were they truly saved or not? Even Paul could not say for sure. But he was afraid they weren’t, because in fact, no one who trusts in the law for their soul is saved.
