Genesis 29:2 (KJV) A Tale of Two Wells

Genesis 29:2 (KJV)

And he looked, and behold a well in the field, and, lo, there were three flocks of sheep lying by it; for out of that well they watered the flocks: and a great stone was upon the well's mouth.

There are no coincidences with God. The similarities and contrasts between this account and the finding of Isaac’s bride are striking. I can surmise that Jacob, who was very close to his mother, had heard many times about where she was from and how she came to marry Isaac. He would have had more than a fair idea of how to get there. He would have known the names of places and people. Though the years between had changed some things, there would have been enough that hadn’t changed to give him a good idea of where to go and who to look for.

Jacob found his love at a well, just as the servant had found Isaac’s at a well. It was Laban with whom the servant had negotiated, just as it was with Jacob.

But in Isaac’s case, the servant did not tarry—his responsibilities lay back in the Promised Land. Jacob, however, was more than willing to tarry; he had some skeletons awaiting him in the Promised Land.

Isaac’s story is a love story for the record books. Jacob’s is a story, that’s for sure.

Separation from sin and nearness to God always produce a better experience. God’s will is done regardless of our surrender to Him, but our enjoyment of His will is more robust when we are committed to Him, close to Him, and as far from the things of worldliness as possible.
