It is in the power of my hand to do you hurt: but the God of your father spake unto me yesternight, saying, Take thou heed that thou speak not to Jacob either good or bad.
But for God
Just about everything with the picture of Jacob and Laban is wrong:
- It was wrong how Jacob ended up going to Laban.
- It was wrong that Jacob went there at all.
- It was wrong that Jacob stayed there so long.
- It was wrong that Laban deceived Jacob into marrying Leah.
- It was wrong that he married the two daughters and then their handmaids.
- It was wrong, the conniving between Jacob and Laban over the animals.
- It was wrong, the sneaking off in the night.
- It was wrong, Rachel’s stealing the idols.
- It was wrong, Laban’s chasing after him in anger.
Every human being involved in this entire account did wrong at one point or another—most of them, over and over again.
But for God. Laban said he had the means to do Jacob hurt, but God intervened. What I’ve discovered over and again is that we people just keep messing up. But for God, we’d do nothing right.
Our world needs a good dose of God right now. The farther people get from God, the worse we tend to mess up. But in the middle of our mess, we still have hope—in God.
