Colossians 2:4 (KJV) Beguiled by Words

Colossians 2:4 (KJV)

And this I say, lest any man should beguile you with enticing words._

The Apostle lays out serious warnings about how easy it is to be led astray by words:

- Beguiled by words

- Enticed by words

- Spoiled by words[1]

This beguiling might result from:

Enticing words, spoken in a way that sounds reasonable but is difficult to prove.

I think evolution and evolutionary science fit this class.

Philosophy, which is simply vain deceit.

I once watched a series of lectures by a Doctor of Philosophy. She spoke about the philosophers of the past and their most well-known theories. When a student asked about a subject relevant to modern life, she silenced him, saying something to the effect of, “We don’t discuss those subjects until students are at the postgraduate level.” They remind me of organizations like the Masons, who don’t let the initiates in on their secrets until they reach higher levels of membership and are not likely to question the absurdity of them.

Traditions of men.

We are witnessing an example of this in our modern political scene. Many entrenched in the Democratic Party refuse to consider that their party has long abandoned its ideals. They vote based on tradition and heritage rather than personal conviction. The same happens with members of churches that have abandoned the faith they once preached. Members continue attending because it’s where their parents went, or where they were married, not because the church preaches the Word of God.

Rudiments of the world.

Sometimes a person believes what they do simply because they want to believe anything other than what God says in His Word.

Whichever one beguiles the soul, it is not after Christ. Wise persons are wary of anything that directs them away from Jesus Christ.

Beguiled by Words: 5 Signs You Are Being Deceived

[1] Colossians 2:8 (KJV)

Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ.

  • Are you staying grounded in God's Word to guard against deceitful teachings?
  • Take time to read Colossians 2 and think how you can strengthen your faith to discern truth from falsehood.
