Philippians 4:8 (KJV)

Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.

 

We find such finality in the word "finally" — or do we?  

We tend to think "finally" means "lastly" or "in conclusion." In fact, it means “that which remains.” It can be the final point in a sub-heading. It can also be like the crescendo, the point all others lead to. A crescendo doesn’t naturally end a thing. It would lead to frustration to walk a person to the edge of a cliff and leave them there. One must naturally come down from the heights.

 

And so, we find here a crescendo, a high point, the place to pull off and enjoy the view before descending into the fertile valley of Christian ministry.  

 

Take time to think.  

 

Think about more than just this verse. Think about those things this verse leads us to think about:  

·      True, honest, just 

·      Pure, lovely, of good report  

·      Virtue, praise

 

Take the time to think on these things.  

·      There are difficulties to be overcome.  

·      There are goals to be obtained.  

·      There is ministry to be rendered.  

But amidst it all, be a thinker.
