But strong meat belongeth to them that are of full age, even those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.
Hebrews 5:11-14 is a challenging passage, to say the least. It even begins by admitting the difficulty: Hebrews 5:11 (KJV)
Of whom we have many things to say, and hard to be uttered, seeing ye are dull of hearing.
My Bible heads this segment “Warnings Against Apostasy,” but I see it more as a lesson on spiritual growth. The passage teaches that maturing in our faith is not primarily the responsibility of the preacher or teacher, but of ourselves. These people had been taught the principles that lead to spiritual growth, but it had not taken hold in them. They are likened to babes who never progress beyond milk, unable to digest strong meat.
I’ve met Christians who, though believers for many years—faithful to church and even possessing good spiritual insights—never grow wise as Christians. They remain spiritually immature, emotionally driven, and silly about simple matters of faith. This text lays the responsibility on them.
Here’s what I believe this passage is saying: Those who mature to the point of discerning good and evil in terms of what is helpful, beneficial, and edifying to others in the faith—those who become capable and trusted teachers, able to pass on sound doctrine to a new generation—are the ones who work at it. They:
• Learn solid doctrine
• Practice it in their own lives and homes
• Speak of these things to both believers and others
• Gain experience in how to effectively communicate doctrine
It’s not that they are always successful in communicating the truth—even the writer here admits he hadn’t been successful with them. But they’ve learned what is not effective, and they’ve grounded their faith in something more solid than emotion.
