Hebrews 4:3 (KJV) Rooting Out Unbelief

Hebrews 4:3 (KJV)

For we which have believed do enter into rest, as he said, As I have sworn in my wrath, if they shall enter into my rest: although the works were finished from the foundation of the world.

I can tell who believes and who doesn’t—the person who can rest in the Lord, not worry, and stress over the matters of life—that’s the believer! But I’ve noticed that even believers can “fret” over things. It’s because, as much as we believe, we carry with us a boatload of unbelief.

Mark 9:24 (KJV)

And straightway the father of the child cried out, and said with tears, Lord, I believe; help thou mine unbelief.

The Word of God tells us:

Hebrews 4:11 (KJV)

Let us labour therefore to enter into that rest, lest any man fall after the same example of unbelief.

I do not believe it is possible for a believer to fall in the sense of losing salvation, but it is certainly possible to fall in the sense of losing our rest, peace of heart, mind, and soul. The Bible says to “labour... to enter into... rest.” How do we do that? The answer follows.

Hebrews 4:12 (KJV)

For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.

We need to invest in the Word of God—dig deep into it. Read it for content and context. Study it for the message and meaning. Analyze it for its practicality and application. Then practice it as our guide in life. The Word of God can expose those areas in our life where unbelief hides and, one spade at a time, root them out.

But the Bible is a spiritual book that can only be understood through the illumination of the Holy Ghost. To read and study the Word of God without such illumination is fruitless. So the Bible says:

Hebrews 4:16 (KJV)

Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.

We have all we need in Jesus Christ, who was:

Hebrews 4:15 (KJV)

... in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin.

Trust Him. Come to Him to “obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need.” Count that need as the need to believe the Word of God and find rest.
