Exodus 18:1 (KJV) When Parents Step Aside

Exodus 18:1 (KJV)

When Jethro, the priest of Midian, Moses' father in law, heard of all that God had done for Moses, and for Israel his people, and that the LORD had brought Israel out of Egypt;

I’ve never been fully convinced that Moses should have hearkened to the voice of Jethro, his father-in-law. Jethro was a priest of Midian, not of the Lord. He did not remain with Moses and Israel after Moses followed his counsel.

That said, I do appreciate that when Jethro heard all that God had done for Moses and Israel, he brought Moses’ wife and two sons and came to see him. His son-in-law had "made good," and Jethro came to acknowledge that.

Exodus 18:9-11 (KJV)

And Jethro rejoiced for all the goodness which the LORD had done to Israel, whom he had delivered out of the hand of the Egyptians. And Jethro said, Blessed be the LORD, who hath delivered you out of the hand of the Egyptians, and out of the hand of Pharaoh, who hath delivered the people from under the hand of the Egyptians. Now I know that the LORD is greater than all gods: for in the thing wherein they dealt proudly, he was above them.

Parents love seeing their children succeed and do well. Sometimes, we get in the way of our adult kids, thinking we still have the right to tell them how to run their affairs. Out of respect (or perhaps intimidation), our children might listen to us whether they ought to or not. Still, it brings joy to see them doing well.

But what is even better, I believe, is to see the Lord working in their lives—using them and blessing them.

My goal as a parent now is to rejoice in how God uses my children, encourage them when God provides the opportunity, and stay out of their way so the Lord Himself can be their guide and counsel.
