For when God made promise to Abraham, because he could swear by no greater, he sware by himself,
Saying, Surely blessing I will bless thee, and multiplying I will multiply thee.
And so, after he had patiently endured, he obtained the promise.
The thing God promised Abraham was clearly a son—Isaac, as we now know—and through him, a nation, which we know as Israel. Verse 15 tells us that Abraham obtained that promise only after he had patiently waited. And patiently is correct. He waited until he was nearly 100 years old, until it was quite impossible for Sarah to conceive (yet she did), and improbable for him to father a child (yet he did).
He waited patiently, as the Bible says, but not perfectly. There were times while he waited when he went places he should not have gone. There were times when he questioned and doubted God’s promise. There was even a time when he took matters into his own hands and had a child by a different woman, a sin that still plagues the world today.
But when everything was said and done, the Bible says in Hebrews 6:15 (KJV):
And so, after he had patiently endured, he obtained the promise.
And again, in Romans 4:20 (KJV):
He staggered not at the promise of God through unbelief; but was strong in faith, giving glory to God.
I’ve never met a man who has waited patiently perfectly. I’m happy to report that perfect patience is not the requirement God sets.
The point of the passage in Hebrews 6 is not about Abraham’s great faith but about God’s immutable promise. When your patience seems to fail, get your eyes off yourself and focus on God’s promises. He does not, and cannot, lie.
