Hebrews 8:3 (KJV)

For every high priest is ordained to offer gifts and sacrifices: wherefore it is of necessity that this man have somewhat also to offer.

 

This man, Jesus, is a priest after the order of Melchisedek, of the true tabernacle which the Lord pitched, not man. This man, Jesus, is the pattern given to Moses. He is the heavenly reality, not merely the shadow or figure. He is so much better than “better” because He is the substance of the thing, not merely the hope of the thing.

 

If the pattern required an offering, what must the substance have to offer?

•       Not a Levitical sacrifice—those could never take away sin.

•       Not an angelic nature—this would be incapable of death and useless anyway.

 

What this “priest after the order of Melchisedek” had to offer was His human life:

•       Perfect,

•       Sinless,

•       Undefiled,

A perfect human sacrifice in place of the sins of all mankind.

 

This man, Jesus, our great High Priest, offered Himself.

 

And this offering, not according to the law but above the law, put away the law for all time.
