1 John 1:8 (KJV) The Believer’s Path to Restoration

1 John 1:8 (KJV)

If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.

One of the big problems with saying “we have no sin” is presented in the next verse:

1 John 1:9 (KJV)

If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

And again in 1 John 2:1 (KJV):

My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous.

To ignore our problem with sin is to deprive ourselves of the continuing benefits of Jesus Christ.[1]

The believer, having enjoyed the blessing of justification, being redeemed through the blood of Christ and reconciled with God, finds that he still wrestles with the deeds of the flesh. This is not a struggle that results in the loss of salvation, but it does result in the loss of peace, conviction of sin, and a distant relationship with his Saviour and God. All of that is resolved by the simple step of confessing our sin to God and appealing to our Advocate. From there, the case is handled in the courts of heaven, and we can be assured that our Advocate never fails, and our God is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”

Why would a person, having such promises, ever choose to deny his sin?

The Believer’s Path to Restoration: Why Denying Our Sin Blocks God’s Blessings

[1] This is a different problem than the one presented in 1 John 1:10 (KJV):

If we say that we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us. In this case, the offender is denying the need for salvation as described in the Bible. This is the soul that is damned to eternal judgment if they do not repent.
