2 Peter 3:7 (KJV) Global Warming or God's Plan?

2 Peter 3:7 (KJV)

But the heavens and the earth, which are now, by the same word are kept in store, reserved unto fire against the day of judgment and perdition of ungodly men.

I have read that when Emperor Nero wanted to expand his palace, he set Rome on fire and blamed it on the Christians, whom he knew preached that the earth would one day melt with fervent heat.

Now we hear unbelievers, some especially evangelistic for their cause, blaming all sorts of environmental problems on global warming (they seem to be swinging toward calling it climate change because sometimes the problem of global warming turns to global cooling).

I have long preached that we know this world will not last forever. It is not intended to. God has revealed His plan to destroy this earth and replace it with a new one “wherein dwelleth righteousness.” I suggest that’s the rub. They know they would not qualify for that earth. Not believing in God, His creation of all things, His salvation through Christ Jesus, or His promise of new heavens and a new earth, they have no alternative but to lay all hope in this one. And they see what is obvious: it is unsustainable indefinitely. It is not meant to last indefinitely.

But amidst God’s declaration of the final destruction of this earth, we find a comforting promise tucked away: “by the same word are kept in store…” The same Bible that tells us of this world’s eventual destruction promises that God is keeping it in store. It is fully stocked with all the air we need, all the water we need, all the energy we need, all the fuel we need, all the light we need, all the glaciers we need, all the lumber we need, for this earth to sustain life until the day of judgment. I do believe in being good stewards; that was the original duty of Adam. But we can relax. God has supplied enough stores here to last as long as He intends it to last.

What the environmentalist is really fighting is God’s Day of judgment.

They won’t win that fight!
