2 Peter 2:7 (KJV) God’s Grace in Dark Places

2 Peter 2:7 (KJV)

And delivered just Lot, vexed with the filthy conversation of the wicked:

What Hope!

No thinking person would suggest that Lot is an example the Christian ought to follow. The choices he made, the places he dwelt, the relationship he had with his wife and children, the compromises he made, his lack of godly obedience, his personal indiscretions—there is very little in his account that the believer can hold onto and follow.

But Lot does, in some ways, remind me of the “lot” we find ourselves in. We live in a fallen world, surrounded by, seeing, and hearing the conversations of the wicked. To separate ourselves too completely would be to abandon our purpose as salt and light in this world. We are called, as Jude teaches, to hate even the garment spotted by the flesh, yet in our efforts to “pull them out of the fire,” our souls do get vexed.

Hope!

In the midst of a long list of examples of God’s judgment:

— The angels that sinned (v. 4)

— The old world of Noah (v. 5)

— The cities of Sodom and Gomorrah (v. 6)

— The unjust on the day of judgment (v. 9)

In the midst of all that, the Bible says God “delivered just Lot.”

As vexed as he was with “the filthy conversation of the wicked,” and as wrong as he was in so many ways, God’s Word tells us that he was just and a righteous man.

Hope!

Not that we might follow in the ways of Lot, but that we might find hope in our justification through the righteousness of Jesus Christ. Turn from sin. Shun unrighteousness. Follow after that which is good.

But when you come under the conviction of your sin, when your soul is vexed by the wicked, find hope. “The Lord knoweth how to deliver the godly out of temptations.”
