1 John 5:6 (KJV) Jesus

1 John 5:6 (KJV)

This is he that came by water and blood, even Jesus Christ; not by water only, but by water and blood. And it is the Spirit that beareth witness, because the Spirit is truth.

To fully understand this passage, one must consider

1 John 5:5-13 (KJV)

Who is he that overcometh the world, but he that believeth that Jesus is the Son of God?

This is he that came by water and blood, even Jesus Christ; not by water only, but by water and blood. And it is the Spirit that beareth witness, because the Spirit is truth.

For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one.

And there are three that bear witness in earth, the Spirit, and the water, and the blood: and these three agree in one.

If we receive the witness of men, the witness of God is greater: for this is the witness of God which he hath testified of his Son.

He that believeth on the Son of God hath the witness in himself: he that believeth not God hath made him a liar; because he believeth not the record that God gave of his Son.

And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son.

He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life.

These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God.

This passage addresses the question, “How do we overcome the world?” The answer is simple: “Believe that Jesus is the Son of God.” But this faith is not a blind leap. The passage provides evidence of:

How He came: By water and blood, as testified by the Holy Spirit.

Who He is: He is God incarnate—co-equal, co-eternal, the fullness of the Godhead bodily.

Who confirms His deity: Though we have the testimony of the Apostles,[1] we also have a greater witness than any human testimony: the witness of God Himself.

The result of this faith: The confident assurance of eternal life.

Jesus came by water and blood, confirmed by the Spirit of Truth. While there are differing interpretations, here is how I understand it:

Water refers to the humanity of Christ.

He was born as any man (though conceived miraculously) and submitted to the ordinances of man, including baptism, to fulfill all righteousness.

Blood points to the gospel of Christ.

He accomplished what no man could. An innocent man, He died for the sins of all men, becoming their substitute and sacrifice. He was buried in their place and rose from the grave three days later for all men.

Spirit declares the deity of Christ.

While the Apostles—especially Peter, Paul, and John—provided credible, verifiable, and trustworthy testimony, the witness of God’s Holy Spirit is even greater. The Spirit convicts us of the truth of Jesus Christ, and, once the gospel is trusted, bears witness with our spirit that we are the sons of God.

Those who have this witness within themselves know that the One in whom they have believed is alive and that He has given them eternal life.
