What then? are we better than they? No, in no wise: for we have before proved both Jews and Gentiles, that they are all under sin;
Paul, writing to people who would be inclined to read the reasoning of a preacher of the Word of God, speaks of “we” and “they.” “We” refers to the people who would read these words of the Apostle. It ought to be remembered that by this time, the Christian faith—and specifically the ministry of Paul—had garnered huge attention in the known world. He had some definite enemies who were not inclined to read what Paul penned. They were not receptive to his message.
We
Those who Paul knew would read this epistle as he wrote, those who read (or likely listened as it was read), and those in the future, like myself, who would read and study this epistle.
They
Those who, for whatever reason, were unlikely to read this epistle. I believe these reasons were purposeful rather than due to lack of access. If they haven’t heard, they need a preacher. Among those who are aware and refuse to read the work of God through Paul, they are the “they” to which he refers.
He further identifies “they” as both Jews and Gentiles. I therefore see in the passage, Jews, Gentiles, and “him which believeth in Jesus”.
Believers are a separate, distinct, and identifiable people—a new body brought about through the gospel. Regardless of whether a person’s heritage is Jew or Gentile, it is the plan of God, His will, that they come out of those cultures and backgrounds to unite with a local church, where there is neither Jew nor Gentile.
