For he that is dead is freed from sin.
There are three subjects melded together within this chapter. They are so intertwined, I’m not sure it’s possible—or profitable—to try and separate them.
There is the subject of death vs. life.
The passage seems to prefer death. But this must not be taken negatively. This death leads to true life.
There is the subject of sin vs. righteousness.
No one likes the concept of servitude, but don’t take this negatively either. Servitude to righteousness is no waste of life.
There is the subject of the wages of sin vs. eternal life.
The lost, the skeptical, and the angry want to point out everything they consider negative about the Bible's message—death, slavery, hell. But complaining about the reality of these things doesn’t make them any less real.
The Bible does not promote the negative side of these subjects; God does not condone them. Instead, through His Word, God points us to the way of escape:
- Choose life over death
- Choose righteousness over sin
- Choose heaven over hell
- Choose Christ over self
