For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death.
I’m a fan of old westerns. That’s partly because I grew up in a cowboy culture—going to and competing in rodeos and other cowboy-type events. In our home, gunfighter ballads were the preferred music, and John Wayne or Clint Eastwood westerns were the movies of choice.
I also have a connection to those old westerns through the stories of my grandparents, who grew up in Oklahoma when it was barely more than a territory. My grandmother was a Creek Indian. My grandfather grew up a cowboy in Oklahoma. He and his sister did riding scenes in some of the old silent western films. Their dad—my great-grandfather—spent time in prison for his participation in a train robbery back in the days of the Youngers. He lived until I was twelve. I loved hearing his tales of the Wild West.
But as much as I like those old westerns, I’m sure glad I don’t live in those times. People lived through whatever they had to because that’s what people do. But lawlessness leads to fearfulness.
To live without law is to live in fear.
There is a freedom that comes through law—moral, righteous, just law.
As we see our world becoming less God-centered—as the Bible assures us it will—we also see it becoming more lawless. As righteous people are driven away from positions of leadership, law enforcement, and education, righteous law becomes the exception rather than the rule.
The final days before the return of the Lord Jesus Christ will be marked by unprecedented lawlessness accompanied by unparalleled fear. But the believer has freedom from such fear.
“For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death.”
