Knowing therefore the terror of the Lord, we persuade men; but we are made manifest unto God; and I trust also are made manifest in your consciences.
This passage must, of course, be taken in context.
The chapter is all about confidence in the resurrection. There is a life much greater than this one beyond the grave. Death is not an “unclothing.” It’s not the end of it all, or even the end of our suffering. Beyond the grave is the potential for life more glorious, more splendid, grander than even those of us who preach it can imagine. We do not wish merely to be unclothed of these earthly troubles; we long to be clothed in the righteous robes of Christ.
But there is also the potential for a life more terrible than even those of us who preach it can describe. There is no such thing as annihilation. Our eternal souls will live forever. It’s only a matter of where, and in what state.
Knowing this to be true, the Apostle writes, “we persuade men.”
Notice:
- It is persuade, not force.
- It is persuade, not coerce.
- It is persuade, not bully.
- It is persuade, not terrorize.
- It is persuade, not browbeat.
- It is persuade, not menace, pressure, threaten, or drive.
Thayer’s Dictionary tells me persuade may mean “to induce one by words to believe,” but it may also mean “to make friends of” and “to gain one’s favor.”
We will all stand before God one day—believers at the Judgment Seat of Christ, and unbelievers at the Great White Throne. We will stand before God alone. No one can stand for us or with us.
No one, that is, except Jesus.
My heart’s passion is to encourage as many as I am able to ask Christ to stand there with them.

“We Persuade Men” — The Urgency of Eternity
Are you ready to stand before God?
Eternity is not a question of if—only where. The Bible is clear: we will all stand before the Lord, either at the Judgment Seat of Christ or the Great White Throne. There’s no middle ground and no second chance.
