1 Thessalonians 3:9 (KJV)
For what thanks can we render to God again for you, for all the joy wherewith we joy for your sakes before our God;
There is no doubt that the apostle had suffered, was suffering, and would suffer again—through afflictions and distresses. His care for the children of God was intense, immeasurable; it was a constant conflict for him. At times, he felt like he couldn’t stand another minute, so great was his concern for their wellbeing in the Lord.
I’m sure he cared for their health and safety, but as his calling was of a spiritual sort, so was his chief concern.
As much as he carried these burdens, he was easily lifted above them.
Notice the double joy.
No matter the affliction, or how difficult the circumstances… no matter the weight of our burdens or the heaviness of our care… the believer, in fellowship with godly, Christ-loving Christians, may always have joy upon joy.
