Desiring to be teachers of the law; understanding neither what they say, nor whereof they affirm.
It seems as if nothing ever really changes. Today, just as then, there are professing Christians who desire to be teachers of the law—the Old Testament law of Moses.
Any good Bible preacher is going to faithfully preach and teach out of and from the Old Testament law. Rightly divided, properly understood, and correctly applied, the law is good. But that’s not what this passage addresses.
These modern-day “teachers of the law” are attempting to bring souls back under bondage to the Old Testament law. This is true legalism. They are often harsh in nature, rigid in all the wrong areas, loose with their language, and sometimes even violent in their disposition. The most egregious thing about them is that, in their desire to be right with God, they rob those who follow them of the liberty that is in Christ.
Paul was confident they were wrong. They were contrary to sound doctrine and to the “glorious gospel of the blessed God,” which he said “was committed to my trust.” It’s no wonder so many of them have a hateful attitude toward the Apostle Paul. (These same people are very often hateful toward Jews, believing they have replaced them.)
The Word of God says in 1 Timothy 3:1 (KJV) This is a true saying, If a man desire the office of a bishop, he desireth a good work. It’s proper and good to desire the work of the ministry. But a preacher of the Word must preach the whole counsel of God—or else he understands neither what he says, nor whereof he affirms.

Teachers of the Law—but Not of the Truth: The Danger of Misusing Moses
✅ Are you being taught grace—or dragged back into bondage?
Don’t just follow anyone with a Bible and a pulpit. Compare their message with the whole counsel of God. Open your Bible, then open your eyes. If what they preach leads to pride, fear, or control instead of liberty in Christ, it’s time to walk away.
➡️ ACTION STEP: Find one passage this week where Paul defends salvation by grace through faith—write it down, then share it with someone else.
💬 QUESTION: Have you ever experienced legalism disguised as Bible teaching? What helped you break free?
