How that by revelation he made known unto me the mystery; (as I wrote afore in few words,
The opening verses of this chapter give us insight into how we might come to know and understand the mysteries of God’s Word. I notice three key words here:
- Heard
- Wrote/Read
- Revelation/Revealed
Notice that the revelation was not made known to all but specifically “unto his holy apostles and prophets.” Paul is referring to the New Testament. This was a limited group of individuals—primarily the apostles—with only a tiny few exceptions, like Luke and Jude.
Paul himself was an apostle, yet he seems to distinguish himself from the others. He was not among them during Christ’s earthly ministry. Rather, he was specifically called to take the gospel to the Gentiles. In that way, Paul stands as an example of what the other apostles were doing—declaring the risen Christ. He is also the human author of most of the New Testament.
For the rest of us, the mystery is made known by a combination of two things:
- We hear.
- We read.
Though we do not have records of most of the apostles’ sermons, we can be sure they were busy declaring what they had seen, heard, and experienced as eyewitnesses of Christ’s life, ministry, death, and resurrection. That we have no surviving manuscripts of those messages is no surprise, considering the fragile nature of ancient documents.
Take the example of Baptist preachers over the last two thousand years as an illustration. While we know they preached, few of their sermons remain—even from just the past century. The absence of preserved messages doesn't mean they weren’t preached—or heard.
All of us today can read what was written and then supernaturally preserved for our benefit. Paul himself said these were “few words.” John added that if everything had been written down, the world could not contain the books that would be needed. We already have enough trouble processing what has been recorded in Scripture. We wouldn’t have been capable of handling more.
I am fully convinced that God inspired the writers of these few words, that they contain all we need for life and godliness, and that both the writers and the original readers recognized these as the very Words of God. There are no others.
