But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things, which is the head, even Christ:
I’ve been mulling over the idea that we are conformed into the image of Christ—at least in this present economy—through our relationship within the church where our Saviour has placed us. He is the head of that body.
Therefore, unity in the body is the means by which we best glorify the Lord.
But unity isn’t natural. It must be a supernatural work in our souls. It must be constantly pursued—a worthwhile endeavor.
And it’s not accomplished by ignoring, brushing off, or covering up things that are contrary to godliness, unity, and the glory of God. It happens when we truthfully speak out. I believe that’s best thought of as the calling of the pastor. We probably don’t need everyone giving their opinions about how others behave.
I am certain it can only be accomplished when the truth is spoken in love.
Kindness, care, and compassion don’t happen when we let others get away with wrongdoing. The most loving thing a parent can do for their children is correct them and teach them. That correction doesn’t have to be given angrily, with frustration, or in a haughty spirit.
We can lovingly speak the truth—as we speak the truth in love.
Because only when the truth is spoken—yes, in love—will we grow up into Him in all things.
