But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men:
The principles of Christianity are contrary to the nature of man—especially in this sin-corrupted state—and it’s no wonder. The example of our Saviour runs contrary to our natural inclinations. Nevertheless, the instruction of the Lord is, “Let this mind be in you…”
Christ was very aware of His relationship with the Father.
So too is every born-again child of God. We are saved, justified, forgiven, seated together with Christ in heavenly places, joint heirs, and eternally secure.
But Christ made Himself of no reputation.
Here’s the challenge we face: our relationship with God is not a reason to boast, but rather a call to make less of self. Being the sons of God—knowing our future estate—we are free to make ourselves of no reputation, of little worth in the eyes of this world.
I dare say I’ll get some pushback from the Christian community on this one. Our Americanized faith often says that being who we are in Christ means we should act like kings rather than paupers today.
Christ humbled Himself unto death.
Death to self—now—focused not on life, but on the souls of others and the service of the Saviour, that’s the watchword of the day.
God has highly exalted Christ.
Life, for the believer, comes after the resurrection.
Do you believe that?
Let this mind be in you.
