Hold fast the form of sound words, which thou hast heard of me, in faith and love which is in Christ Jesus.
There’s a powerful contrast just two verses later in:
2 Timothy 1:15 (KJV)
This thou knowest, that all they which are in Asia be turned away from me; of whom are Phygellus and Hermogenes.
Barnes notes that Paul likely spoke in general terms here since he soon commends Onesiphorus, who clearly had not turned away. Still, the contrast remains striking—“Hold fast…” versus “All… be turned away.”
Whether they turned away from the Lord or simply from Paul and his troubles is a matter for discussion. But given the persecution of that day, it’s worth remembering the Donatists—believers just a couple of centuries later insisted that those who denied Christ under pressure could not rejoin the fellowship. Paul may well have meant that turning away from him—and the sound doctrine he taught—was equivalent to turning from Christ Himself.
Yes, every believer has soul liberty. We must each form our own convictions and worship God according to our own conscience. But God also gave us teachers. If we’ve been faithfully taught the Word of God, we should not turn from that teacher—or from those sound words—lightly.
