Hebrews 11:38 (KJV)
(Of whom the world was not worthy:) they wandered in deserts, and in mountains, and in dens and caves of the earth.
I have often thought upon this phrase: “Of whom the world was not worthy.”
We think so highly of this world. We cling to it, pamper it, and even worship it. We assign it terms of endearment like “Mother Earth.” At times, we elevate—at least in our minds—primitive religious systems that made much of the earth.
Modern progressive leaders are prone to tax their people into poverty, supposedly to divert funds to environmental issues. Yet the evidence suggests they are far less interested in genuinely investing that money than they are in preventing people from obtaining levels of success that would enable them to “take advantage” of the resources this world has to offer.
The health industry, workout equipment, supplements, and pharmaceuticals thrive because we place such a premium on remaining in this world’s system as long as possible.
But this world is no treasure.
It is corrupted. It is temporal. It groans for the day of redemption, when it will be replaced with a new heaven and a new earth.
Some of the greatest patriots and lovers of their country have served as ambassadors in far less desirable places. That’s really the perspective we ought to have of this world.
We serve here not because we love it, but because we love our home—our true home. And we want to be the best representatives of our home we possibly can be, while assisting other representatives on their tour of duty here.
