God also bearing them witness, both with signs and wonders, and with divers miracles, and gifts of the Holy Ghost, according to his own will?
Salvation was first spoken to us by the Lord (vs. 3) and confirmed unto us by them that heard Him—primarily the Apostles. Then the Bible says their message was confirmed by the witness of God through signs, wonders, diverse miracles, and gifts of the Holy Ghost, according to His own will.
If you had questioned the Apostles in those days about their qualifications to preach, their answer wouldn’t have been an ordination paper. They would have pointed to two things:
- They were eyewitnesses of the Lord. As John put it in 1 John 1:1, “...we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked upon, and our hands have handled, of the Word of life.”
- The miracles—(abbreviating Hebrews 2:4.)
I don’t see that everyone in the early churches performed miracles, nor do I see that any of them performed miracles all the time or at will. I do believe a biblical case can be made for the continuing of the gifts of the Holy Ghost. But those are always according to God’s will and are not synonymous with signs, wonders, and miracles. In other words—all of that has ceased.
So what about those of us who believe God’s will is for us to keep telling people about Jesus, the gospel, and the wonderful offer of salvation? What do we have as God’s witness that our message is from Him? Do we really need to point to an ordination paper? That’s the witness of men—not of God.
When asked what gives us the right to talk about Jesus, what should we say? We just point to two things:
- What Jesus has done in us.
If we know we are saved, how can we help but tell others? If we know our sins are forgiven, if we have peace with God that we did not have before, if we walk with God and know He walks with us—how could we hold that back? - The Bible.
The Bible is God’s witness that we are His witnesses.
I believe God still gives His people gifts of the Holy Ghost, according to His own will. But those gifts simply work themselves out. They are not signs or proofs. They are tools He has given us to serve Him. The true witness of God that our message is true is found in the Bible.

📣 Are you relying on ordination or on God’s witness?
The early apostles didn’t flash credentials—they shared what they saw, what they knew, and what the Scriptures said. That’s still enough today.
