Wherefore (as the Holy Ghost saith, To day if ye will hear his voice,
Now here is a very interesting point to ponder. The Word of God says the Holy Ghost says, “To day if ye will hear his voice…” (Hebrews 3:7).
This is a direct quote from Psalms 95:7-9 (KJV):
For he is our God; and we are the people of his pasture, and the sheep of his hand. To day if ye will hear his voice, harden not your heart, as in the provocation, and as in the day of temptation in the wilderness: When your fathers tempted me, proved me, and saw my work.
The Holy Spirit of God speaks through the Word of God.
So many people struggle with hearing the voice of God. This seems especially true of those who have lived a sin-filled past or have, in some way, sinned so grievously that they are now grief-stricken and guilt-ridden—unable to accept that God could or would forgive their particular sin. They’re looking for God to speak to them in some extraordinary way to confirm He has forgiven them.
In effect, they are asking God to do for them what He does not do for anyone else. They want Him to speak apart from the Bible.
Here’s the plain truth: if you are saved, God speaks to you every time you read the Bible, hear the Bible preached (truthfully), or meditate on what you have read or heard in the Scriptures.
God the Holy Ghost speaks to us through the Bible.
So when the Bible says, “Harden not your heart,” it means:
- Don’t harden your heart by avoiding the Bible.
- Don’t harden your heart by refusing to believe the Bible.
- Don’t harden your heart by rejecting the Bible’s promises.
Some days you may hear the voice of God more clearly than others. But every day, if you will open the Bible, you will hear His voice.
