Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.
Hebrews 4:1-11 is consumed with the idea of rest. It’s not speaking of Sabbath rest or of God’s rest from creation, because those are both ruled out in verses 3-4. He’s not referring to the rest we enter into once we reach eternal heaven, because there will be no labor necessary there, and we do not work to earn our eternal rest—it is given to us freely through the work of Christ on the Cross.
It is a rest Israel, who first heard it preached, did not enter into because of unbelief.
It is a rest of faith.
It is—I believe—peace with God and peace of mind and soul in this world.
It is earned through a type of labor.
First, through the use of the Word of God (verses 12-13).
Not only reading the Word of God but laboring in it: studying, internalizing, memorizing, and meditating upon it.
Second, through a walk with Christ (verses 14-15).
To consider Him, to know Him, to learn to love Him. He understands and knows our infirmities and can be touched by them. Rest of heart, mind, and soul comes when one truly realizes the depths Christ endured for us.
And finally, through earnest prayer (verse 16).
Prayer is opened to us through our Great High Priest, Jesus Christ, and it is informed for us through the Word of God. Effectual prayer—the prayer of faith—is emboldened by our relationship with Christ and carried along by our knowledge and application of the Bible.
It is therefore a labor. There is work to be done to have such rest. Few ever really enter into it because so few are willing to put forth this effort.

Come Boldly: Entering God’s Rest
💬 Are you longing for peace in your heart and mind? Hebrews 4 reminds us there’s a rest for the people of God—but few ever enter it. Why? Because it requires faith, time in the Word, a walk with Christ, and bold prayer.
