Which was a figure for the time then present, in which were offered both gifts and sacrifices, that could not make him that did the service perfect, as pertaining to the conscience;
A profitable study through the Word of God is the topic of the conscience. Gill writes, “There is in every man a conscience, and when sin is charged home upon it, that is filled with a sense of divine wrath; nor can it be pacified with anything short of what will answer the law and justice of God, and which is only done by the blood and righteousness of Christ.”
Our passage implies something that only a man trained as a Pharisee, like Paul, could have known: the gifts and sacrifices of the Levitical system did not clear the conscience. The priest’s own conscience testified that what he was doing was shallow and without merit on its own. Not every priest reached this awareness, but those who saw in those gifts and sacrifices the picture of the one true sacrifice promised by God found their conscience cleared. David was one of those rare men who understood this: “Sacrifices and offerings thou wouldest not…”
Far too many among professing Christians today have fallen short in this matter. They live lives of religious duty, constantly striving to do more, pray more, read more, and witness more—hoping that one more act of devotion will finally ease their troubled conscience. The problem is they’ve missed the mark.
True Christianity, the kind Christ leads us into, is not about religious deeds. It is a personal walk and relationship with the Lord Himself. The Christian’s conscience is made perfect, not by anything he has done or ever will do, but because of what Jesus did—once and for all.
The Christian lives in all good conscience, representing Christ to the world, because he understands and trusts the love of God and the finished work of Christ on his behalf. He knows he is not sinless. He studies the Word of God and practices his faith to keep the flesh in check. But at the end of the day, he can lay his head in peace and sleep with a free conscience, knowing he has an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous.
