For if he were on earth, he should not be a priest, seeing that there are priests that offer gifts according to the law:
I’m fascinated by the phrase, “if He were on earth…” Though Jesus has existed from eternity past and will continue into eternity future, there was a moment in time when He was, as a man, with us on earth.
Oh, how we could wish for such a day again!
We long for and look for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ.
The disciples certainly did not want Him to leave earth in their day. Peter even went so far as to rebuke Jesus for speaking of it. But His leaving this earth, we know through the crucifixion, was essential to God’s plan for our redemption—so much so that Jesus told Peter that his idea of Christ remaining was of Satan.
If He were on earth—if He had not gone to the cross, been resurrected, and ascended to His Father—nothing would have changed. Religion would still deceive souls, and we would have no gift of eternal life.
Oh, how I long for the day when I will see Him face to face! But I am deeply grateful for the day when He, as our great High Priest, offered us the gift of eternal life by giving up His life for mine. I’m especially thankful that He showed Himself alive after His death by many infallible proofs, ascended from earth into heaven, and now sits at the right hand of the Heavenly Father, prepared to receive us to Himself.
