Hebrews 7:24 (KJV)

But this man, because he continueth ever, hath an unchangeable priesthood.

Human history is, if anything, a testament to change:

• Changes of culture
• Changes of technology
• Changes of lifestyle
• Changes in standards of living
• Changes in government

Even within the realm of worshiping the one eternal God, there have been changes of dispensation:

• The dispensation of innocence
• The dispensation of conscience
• The dispensation of human government
• The dispensation of promise
• The dispensation of law
• The dispensation of grace

There were also different forms of leadership among God’s people:

• Patriarchy
• Moses/Joshua
• Judges
• Kings (Saul, then the Davidic family)

Israel split into:

• The Northern Kingdom
• The Southern Kingdom

They moved from strictly temple worship to the more localized synagogue worship.

In Hebrews, we learn of the transition from the Levitical priesthood to that after the order of Melchisedec—namely, Jesus Christ, our great High Priest.

Here’s the promise of God’s Word: in Christ we have something eternal, secure, trustworthy, and unchanging. We have an unchangeable priesthood. Because Jesus ever liveth, we can be assured that we will live eternally too.
