Hebrews 6:1 (KJV) Growing Without Compromise

Hebrews 6:1 (KJV)
Therefore leaving the principles of the doctrine of Christ, let us go on unto perfection; not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works, and of faith toward God,

My first experience with a gross misapplication of this passage happened very shortly after I had been baptized and began to learn the things of the Lord. (I was saved about two years earlier but didn’t begin to grow as a Christian until after I was baptized and faithfully attending church.) At the time, I was sharing a home with an uncle of mine. He was a Christian and very vocal about it. He was also a significant influence in developing my hunger to learn more about the Lord. But he was not the one who invited me to church. I, therefore, ended up attending an Independent Baptist church instead of the Southern Baptist church where he went.

Almost immediately, I began drinking in what I was learning at church, studying the Bible daily, and telling others what I was discovering. My uncle got offended and told me that the Bible and church were only starting places for spiritual growth. He believed that after salvation and church attendance, the twelve steps of AA offered a more enlightened and deeper path of spirituality.

I’ve known a number of pastors who take the same tack concerning their early years as believers. They see the Independent Baptist church they grew up in as stuck in the early principles of faith and not truly growing. They believe that embracing reformation theology, progressive methods, or emergent philosophies is justified and even encouraged by this text.

But the context tells us something entirely different. The audience was primarily Jewish converts who, though having trusted Christ, struggled with leaving Jewish tradition and law. They had come to see that the Old Testament preached Christ in shadows, figures, and principles. These laid for them a good foundation, but it was time to build upon that foundation. It was time to move on to the body of truth revealed in the New Testament.

There is nothing we can learn that should move us past faithfulness to church, old paths Christianity, and fundamental Bible doctrines.

Whatever urges us to leave these principles is apostasy.

💬 Are you building on the foundation of faith or drifting from it? Many today are abandoning the old paths, but Hebrews 6:1 calls us to grow without leaving the truth.
