James 4:10 (KJV) God Is Treasure Enough

James 4:10 (KJV)

Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up.

The broader context of this familiar verse is James 4:6–10 (KJV):

But he giveth more grace. Wherefore he saith, God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble. Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double minded. Be afflicted, and mourn, and weep: let your laughter be turned to mourning, and your joy to heaviness. Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up.

Part of the process of drawing nigh to God—and of resisting the devil—is humility. To learn humility, to embrace affliction, mourning, and heaviness, is such an integral part of nearness to God that I fear much of modern Christianity knows little of the Lord.

We “ask amiss” so often these days when we ask to be close to God, because we ask it that we may “consume it upon our own lusts.” We “desire to have,” we “fight and war” to be close to God—not for the sake of His nearness, but we’re attracted to His treasures.

In modern terms, we’re trying to “suck up” to a great aunt, hoping she’ll let us have her inheritance. It’s as wrong to do with God as it would be with the aunt.

God is treasure enough.

The wonder of drawing near to God is that, in the treasure of His presence, we find grace in abundance, freedom from the devil, mourning turned to laughter and heaviness into joy.

God Is Treasure Enough: Nearness to God Isn’t About His Gifts

Are you seeking God for who He is—or for what He can give you?

James 4:10 reminds us, “Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up.” Real closeness to God isn’t about “sucking up” for blessings—it’s about finding joy and grace in His presence alone.

Humility for me is seeking to know God's Will in all that i do daily and the allowing Him to work that out in my life.
I struggle with this because my priorities are not always His. When I truly humble myself before Him, I open myself to His correction
