2 Peter 1:10 (KJV) Weights Off, Eyes Forward

2 Peter 1:10 (KJV)

Wherefore the rather, brethren, give diligence to make your calling and election sure: for if ye do these things, ye shall never fall:

Taken on its own, one might think the verse encourages a person to take steps to secure his salvation— to be diligent so that he may not lose it. The context, however, teaches something quite different.

When a child of God is not diligent to grow in the graces expressed just above, they, according to the previous verse, lose sight of those eternal things that are “afar off” — in the spiritual, eternal world beyond our eyes. He or she, without diligence in spiritual growth, may forget those doctrines of salvation regarding our sins and what Christ has done with them. Having forgotten that those old sins were purged, he or she may fall into new sins.

The Word of God is careful to remind us of these doctrines and to stir us to spiritual growth— not so we won’t lose our salvation, but so we experience an abundant entrance into the everlasting kingdom.

Notice it’s not so they “have an entrance,” but that they “have an abundant one.”

Entrance into heaven is purchased for the believer through the gospel of Christ. It is free for the trusting.

But an abundant entrance is won. It is gained through laying off the weights and sins that so easily beset us, by running with patience the race that is set before us. It is obtained by forgetting those things which are behind and pressing toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.

  • The Word of God guides us.
  • The Spirit of God empowers us.
  • The church God places us in encourages and edifies us.

But if we would have an abundant entrance into the everlasting kingdom, it is we who must run to obtain.

Weights Off, Eyes Forward: Not Just In—Abundantly In!

🏃‍♂️ Are you running to simply “make it” into heaven—or are you running for an abundant entrance?

2 Peter 1:10 reminds us to “give diligence to make your calling and election sure.” Salvation is a free gift through Jesus Christ—but how we live determines how rich and full our entrance into His kingdom will be.

👉 Here’s the challenge: Lay aside the weights of sin, doubt, and fear. Press forward in faith. Grow daily in grace. Run to obtain!

💬 Question for you: What’s one “weight” you’ve had to cast off in your walk with Christ? Share in the comments—we grow when we encourage each other!
