2 Peter 2:8 (KJV) Lot’s Choices, Our Challenge

2 Peter 2:8 (KJV)

(For that righteous man dwelling among them, in seeing and hearing, vexed his righteous soul from day to day with their unlawful deeds;)

Lot is set forth in the Bible as a righteous man who made poor choices. He and Abraham lived as strangers in this world. When the time came to separate their flocks, nothing indicates Lot’s choice was necessarily wrong. If he had chosen the other direction, it would have been Abraham in that area. As it was, Abraham had his hands full with the people of Canaan. It’s not like they were going to church with him up there either.

Neither could Lot have been expected to isolate completely from the people of Sodom and Gomorrah. Living in this world requires commerce and trade. We’re not to be hermits—uncaring and ignorant of those around us. Dwelling among them, it would have been impossible not to see and hear their unlawful deeds.

Here’s my suggestion: He didn’t have to vex his soul by them.

The Bible says his was a righteous soul. He could have focused more of his attention on the Lord. He could have led his family to see and hear more from God than from this unlawful world.

Our world today is on par with the godlessness of Sodom and Gomorrah. Because of technology—radio, television, and worse, the internet and social media—we are spectators of these unlawful deeds day to day, even moment by moment. The answer is not to hide our heads in the proverbial sand, but neither is it to embrace this constant vision of worldliness.

We who know Christ have an alternative to vexing our righteous souls—
  • We can cast our cares upon Him.
  • We can immerse ourselves in the wonderful things of God.
  • We can hear His voice morning, noon, and night through the Word of God.
  • We can pray. We can witness.
  • We can testify to this world and those around us of the manifold grace of God.

Rather than allowing our souls to be vexed by this world’s ungodliness, we can “be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.”

Lot’s Choices, Our Challenge: Living Righteously in an Unrighteous Culture

Are you letting the noise of this world vex your soul like Lot in Sodom? Every day, we’re bombarded by ungodly messages—from TV, the internet, and social media. But the Bible says we don’t have to live weighed down. We can turn our eyes to Jesus, fill our hearts with Scripture, and cast every care on Him.
