Matthew 14:2 (KJV) Herod Got It Wrong—Do We?

Matthew 14:2 (KJV)

And said unto his servants, This is John the Baptist; he is risen from the dead; and therefore mighty works do shew forth themselves in him.

I’m thinking to myself, “Wow, he had things turned around!” Herod thought Jesus was like John, rather than understanding that John was like Jesus.

Herod had no real experience with Christ, but he did with John the Baptist. Though he was the one who ordered John’s execution, he still recognized that there was a unique power in him. Interestingly, John had never performed a miracle, yet he was full of vigor, force, and moral conviction. What Herod failed to see is that the source of John’s strength was Christ. It was God’s Spirit driving John, not John driving himself.

We find this same confusion in our world today. The unbelieving world, not knowing the Lord, attributes the strength of Christianity to personalities they observe. They cannot see that it is Christ who makes leaders, not leaders who make Christianity.

Sadly, this mistake is also found among Christians. It is far easier to fix our eyes on men than on Christ. Too often professing believers nearly worship Christian leaders and spokesmen, placing them—though they would deny it—above the Lord Himself.

We saw an example of this just last week. Charlie Kirk’s assassination was horrific—against a man who, by all accounts, was a good man. The tragedy was magnified by the fact that it was documented in real-time on social media. People across the nation, friend and foe alike, now have that awful image seared into memory. For some, the reaction has been so strong it almost appears to them like a turning point toward national revival. Countless posts have gone out saying, “If your pastor didn’t address the Charlie Kirk murder last Sunday, find another church.”

But here’s the truth: church is about no one but Christ. If Christ Himself—His death, His burial, and His resurrection—was not the focus, then you would have legitimate cause to seek another church. (By the way, He has never been the focus of the majority of denominations.)

So, be careful not to mix up your faith. We are to follow Christ—no one else.

Herod Got It Wrong—Do We?  Faith in Jesus, Not Personalities

πŸ“– Who do you follow—Christ or men?
Herod thought Jesus was John the Baptist risen from the dead (Matthew 14:2 KJV). Today, many still confuse the power of Christ with the personalities of men. Christianity is not built on leaders—it is built on the Lord Jesus Christ.
