And honour not his father or his mother, he shall be free. Thus have ye made the commandment of God of none effect by your tradition.
One of the more interesting experiences I’ve had since engaging in apologetic work is my conversations with Catholics. They often claim that their system provides unity because they have a “head” and an organized structure to give them doctrine. In turn, they accuse Protestants (and mistakenly lump Baptists with them) of creating confusion, since “everyone just reads the Bible for themselves and makes up their own beliefs.”
What they ignore is that even within the Catholic system there are dissenters, churches, leaders, and even major officials whose views oppose those of the Pope himself. And of course, the Catholic Church is full of members who do not practice or believe what their system teaches.
To the point of this passage, Catholics also cite verses from the Epistles to justify traditions and to place them on equal—or even higher—ground than the Bible. Their contention is that Scripture is incomplete, and their church is authorized to fill in the gaps. But in doing so, they “have made the commandment of God of none effect by [their] tradition.”
Still, we must be careful not to think this problem belongs to them alone. It is easy for any of us to slip into patterns where what we’ve always done, what we perceive to be right, or what we’ve been taught begins to supersede God’s Word.
The “tradition” that the Apostle Paul warned us to keep is the tradition of the Word of God itself. Make it your tradition to study the Bible honestly. Let Scripture shape your thinking, direct your actions, and guide your worship—and then you will see the Word of God have its full effect.

Always God’s Word: Truth Over Ritual
Are you letting tradition cancel out God’s truth? 🤔
Many people trust man-made systems, but Jesus warned: “Thus have ye made the commandment of God of none effect by your tradition” (Matthew 15:6). The Bible alone is complete, final, and sufficient.
📖 If you’re searching for real Bible answers, it’s time to dig into God’s Word—not tradition. His truth gives clarity, not confusion.
