He which testifieth these things saith, Surely I come quickly. Amen. Even so, come, Lord Jesus.
I was thinking—the first person who said, “I’m not looking for the undertaker. I’m looking for the Uppertaker!” eventually met the undertaker. He’s dead and buried. Who knows how many who repeated this phrase have also had their appointment with the undertaker? (The line has been preached by many well-known voices—Raymond Barber, Adrian Rogers, David Jeremiah, J. Harold Smith, Willie Mullan, Maze Jackson, and even attributed by some to Alexander Maclaren. Over time it has become a kind of “preacher’s proverb.”)
I’ve often said, I’ll not be disappointed if the Lord does not return in my lifetime—because I understand the point and purpose of the Lord’s timing in this matter. But I’ll not be surprised if He comes tomorrow—because I believe the promise is imminent and because I recognize that the signs of the times point to Christ’s return.
The older I grow, however, the easier it is to expect to enter heaven by way of the grave rather than the rapture. There was a man in the church I pastored in Astoria, OR, who once woke his wife while he was dreaming. She was startled to find him jumping up and down, still in his sleep, on the bed. She called to him, “Mike, what are you doing?” He responded, “Rapture practice.” We laughed and spoke about rapture practice many times since then. Mike has since passed into eternity. I’ll meet him in the resurrection but not the rapture.
Here’s the point: No matter how many centuries go by, or how many children of God “sleep in the Lord” and miss the rapture, the promise of Christ is still true: “Surely I come quickly.” So the believer is justified in praying, “Amen. Even so, come, Lord Jesus.”

Looking for the Uppertaker: Rapture or Resurrection—The Promise Remains
🚨 Bible Question for You: Do you believe Jesus could return in our lifetime—or do you expect to meet Him through death first? Revelation 22:20 promises: “Surely I come quickly. Amen. Even so, come, Lord Jesus.”
Generations of believers have repeated the phrase, “I’m not looking for the undertaker, I’m looking for the Uppertaker!”—yet many have already met the undertaker. Still, the promise of Christ’s coming remains certain.
