Joshua 5:5 (KJV) Don’t Squander Your Wander

Joshua 5:5 (KJV)

Now all the people that came out were circumcised: but all the people that were born in the wilderness by the way as they came forth out of Egypt, them they had not circumcised.

Circumcision was an Old Testament sign whose New Testament counterpart is baptism. In both the Old and New Testaments, the circumcision that truly matters is that of the heart. It represents separation—a cutting away from the things of this world and belonging wholly to God.

It’s still commonly practiced in the U.S., often as a cultural custom or for health reasons. But for Israel, under the Old Testament covenant, it was the sacred symbol that set them apart. It made them physically and deliberately different—forever marked as God’s people. This difference was often what caused them to be hated by the nations around them.

Interestingly, Israel maintained this mark of separation all through their years of slavery in Egypt, yet neglected it during their forty years of wandering in the wilderness.

  • They were faithful in slavery.
  • They were not faithful in liberty.

Only when they entered the Promised Land and faced the reality of war did they return to this crucial sign of obedience—the mark that identified them as the people God intended them to be.

We must be careful in times of ease that we do not slip into spiritual wandering—aimless, purposeless, and spiritless living. No one likes slavery, and all of us dread war, but to wander through life without a right relationship with God is the greatest reproach a man can know.

Don’t Squander Your Wander: Faithful in Bondage, Lost in Liberty

Are you wandering spiritually—going through the motions but missing the heart of obedience? 🏜️
Joshua 5:5 reminds us that Israel was faithful in slavery but careless in freedom. God calls His people to be set apart, not to drift when life feels easy.
