Luke 3:5 (KJV)
Every valley shall be filled, and every mountain and hill shall be brought low; and the crooked shall be made straight, and the rough ways shall be made smooth;
The prophecy John the Baptist quoted in Isaiah 40 finds its ultimate fulfillment when Christ returns to establish His Kingdom. At that time, as I understand the Bible, Jesus’ feet will touch the Mount of Olives. An earthquake will occur, and a geographical transformation will take place in Israel—something unimaginable if it were not described in such detail in the Word of God. A river will flow from Jerusalem and heal the waters of the Dead Sea. The mountains surrounding Jerusalem will be leveled, valleys will be filled, and the space of occupied land will expand, I believe, to receive the New Jerusalem—something like 1,500 square miles.
But there is also a spiritual application for believers today:
Every valley shall be filled.
Depression finds victory in fellowship with Christ. It’s not always that the valley disappears—many times it’s simply filled with purpose, promise, and potential.
Every mountain and hill shall be brought low.
Pride, power, and worldly riches become meaningless in the presence of Jesus Christ. His greatness, His power, and His unsearchable riches make those of the earth pale before Him.
The crooked shall be made straight.
Confusion clears through faith in Christ. Evil ways are corrected as the believer walks in truth.
The rough ways shall be made smooth.
Sin and the corruption of the flesh are conquered in Christ. The deeds of the flesh are mortified, marriages are restored, and families are healed. Rough men become Christlike.
I am waiting for the complete fulfillment of Isaiah’s prophecy. With each passing day, I find more reason to pray fervently for the coming of my Lord and Saviour:
“Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth, as it is in heaven.”
Until that day, I’ll keep preaching John’s message and calling on men that, through faith, “Every valley shall be filled, and every mountain and hill shall be brought low; and the crooked shall be made straight, and the rough ways shall be made smooth.”
