So there went up thither of the people about three thousand men: and they fled before the men of Ai.
The Bible is very clear that the reason for Israel’s defeat at Ai was sin in the camp. Achan had taken the accursed thing from Jericho. (Notice that it was supposed to be dedicated to God—when we take or keep what belongs to God, it turns from a blessing into a curse.)
There were also some presumptions that contributed to the loss. They never asked God. It wasn’t wrong to send men to spy out Ai, but it was wrong not to take their findings to the Lord. He would have instructed their battle plan far better than they could have, and He would have warned them about Achan before the fact.
I also want to note the presumption of recommending that only a few men go to battle. Unless God specifically instructs otherwise—as He did with Gideon—God works through the whole of His people. It’s a mistake to treat Christian service as a burden we should spare others from. No matter what the task, the work is always greater than we are and requires all hands.
The battle is the Lord’s. Whether it looks like an overwhelming force or an easy skirmish, we can never win without God.
- Recruit everyone.
- Involve everyone.
- Find a place for everyone.
And let God give the victory as He pleases.

When Israel faced Ai, they failed—not because the enemy was strong, but because sin was in the camp and they never asked God. Every believer faces battles like that. We lose ground when we fight without prayer, unity, and obedience.
